Lion Fountain

The Lion Fountain stands in the Rose Courtyard of the Imperial Castle. Both the courtyard and the fountain are modelled on the famous Court of the Lions in the Alhambra palace in Granada.

About the fountain

It was created together with the castle, designed by Franz Schwechten and completed around 1910.

It has two stone basins: water flows from the upper to the lower one, which is supported by eight figures of lions. In the Alhambra there are twelve lions.

After the war the place was neglected, and there were even garages for buses here. Only revitalisation restored its former look.

Good to know

Next to it stand Magdalena Abakanowicz's sculpture “5 Figures” and the Katyn Monument in the Castle Garden.
