Jan Kochanowski Monument

The Jan Kochanowski Monument has the form of an obelisk with a medallion. It stands on Ostrów Tumski, on the square in front of the Lubrański Academy.

History

The foundation stone was laid in 1884, on the 300th anniversary of the poet's death, and the monument was unveiled in 1885. The obelisk was designed by Antoni Krzyżanowski, and the medallion with the portrait was made by Wiktor Brodzki. The money was raised in a public collection.

The Germans destroyed the monument in 1940. In 1984 it was recreated to a design by Jerzy Sobociński, and in 2002 it was moved to its present place.

A curiosity

In 1564–1574 Kochanowski was provost of the Poznań cathedral chapter, which gave him a large income. According to Wikipedia he himself never stayed in Poznań.
