Monument to the Polish Underground State

The Monument to the Polish Underground State and the Home Army stands behind the Grand Theatre, at the corner of Aleje Niepodległości and ul. Libelta, on the edge of Wieniawski Park.

About the monument

It was designed by Prof. Mariusz Kulpa of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, winner of the competition. It was unveiled on 26 September 2007 in the presence of, among others, the last President of the Republic of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski.

It consists of six memorial pillars with plaques, a glazed crypt symbolising the descent into the underground, and the silhouettes of eagles rising above them. The rust-coloured sheet metal was brought from Finland.

Cast-iron plaques commemorate Greater Poland people who died between 1 September 1939 and 3 July 1945.
