Bamberka Well

The Bamberka Well stands by the west wall of the town hall. Its decoration is a bronze figure of a woman in Bamber costume, with a yoke and jugs. It commemorates the Bambers, settlers from around Bamberg who in the 18th century settled the villages near Poznań.

History

The well was unveiled in 1915. It was funded by the Poznań merchant and wine dealer Leopold Goldenring. The plinth was designed by the builder Stahl, and the figure was sculpted by Józef Wackerle.

The sculptor's model was Jadwiga Gadziemska, an employee of Goldenring's wine shop, who herself did not come from a Bamber family.

The basin once served as a drinking trough for horses, and residents also used it. After the war the well was moved several times, and in 1977 it returned to the Old Market Square.

Good to know
