Gate of Poznań ICHOT

The Gate of Poznań is an interactive heritage centre, opened on 1 May 2014. Instead of display cases it has multimedia rooms that tell the history of Ostrów Tumski and the birth of the Polish state.

About the place

The building was designed by Arkadiusz Emerla and Maciej Wojda of the Ad Artis studio in Kraków. A plain concrete block stands on the right bank of the Cybina and deliberately turns visitors' eyes across the river towards the cathedral.

A 63-metre footbridge over the Cybina links the main building with the restored 19th-century Cathedral Lock on Ostrów Tumski.

What to see

The main exhibition tells the story, more than a thousand years long, of the cathedral island next to the Gate of Poznań building, from the founding of the stronghold in the 10th century to the present day. It is about people, events and key moments linked to the island, where learning, art and trade developed.

The visit leads through four rooms: Stronghold (the beginnings of settlement on Ostrów Tumski), Water (the circumstances of Poland's baptism), Gold (the development of the island from the 16th to the 19th century) and Stained Glass (themes from the island's recent history). The viewing terrace on the roof is part of the exhibition.

Good to know

A tourist information point operates in the building.

With the Poznań Tourist Card a ticket costs PLN 21 (reduced PLN 17).
