Dolphin Fountain (Kronthal's Well)

The Dolphin Fountain, also called Kronthal's Well or the Lederer Fountain, stands on Aleje Marcinkowskiego, near the junction with ul. 23 Lutego.

History

Earlier a municipal well funded by Edward Raczyński stood here. In 1909 it was replaced by a fountain by the Berlin sculptor Hugo Lederer. The design was personally approved by Emperor Wilhelm II.

The donor was the merchant Gustaw Kronthal, hence one of the fountain's names. In 2006 it underwent a thorough renovation.

What to see

A stone basin of shell limestone and copper sculptures of boys on dolphins at the ends of the balustrade.

According to the journalist Adam Pleskaczyński the “dolphins” are in fact catfish, as the structure of their mouths is said to show.

Right next to it stand the Karol Marcinkowski Monument and a sculpture of the Golem.
