The first Mickiewicz monument
After the poet's death in 1855 the people of Poznań collected money for a monument and ordered it from Władysław Oleszczyński in Paris. The Prussian authorities long refused to agree to the location, and permission was given only at the end of 1858.
The monument was unveiled on 7 May 1859 in the garden by St Martin's Church. It was the first monument to Mickiewicz on Polish lands. In 1904 it was replaced by a bronze cast, and in 1939 the Germans destroyed both monuments.
The site of the first monument by St Martin's Church is today marked by a plaque.
Good to know
On the same square stands the Poznań June 1956 Monument, and next to it stretches Mickiewicz Park in front of the Grand Theatre.
