Church of St Francis Seraphicus (Bernardine Church)

The church is called the Bernardine church because in 1456 the Observant Franciscans, known as Bernardines after Bernardino of Siena, founded a monastery here. The present Baroque church was built in 1661–1668.

History

The Gothic church of 1471–1473 was burned by the Swedes in 1655. The new one was designed by Krzysztof Bonadura the Elder and Jerzy Catenazzi.

In 1730–1738 the façade was rebuilt and tall tower spires were added to a design by Jan Adam Stier of Leszno.

After the dissolution of the order in 1835 the church served various institutions. Destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt until 1988. Since 1974 it has been a parish church.

What to see

The façade with sculptures of Franciscan saints in niches, the work of Franciszek Domusberger of Wschowa.
