Church of St John of Jerusalem Outside the Walls

After the cathedral it is the oldest surviving church in Poznań and one of the first churches in Poland built of brick. It was raised at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries by the Knights Hospitaller, brought here by Duke Mieszko the Old.

History

The patron is St John the Baptist, called “of Jerusalem” after the hospital that the Hospitallers ran in Jerusalem. The epithet “Outside the Walls” means that the church stood outside the former stronghold.

At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries the church was rebuilt in the late Gothic style, with a sacristy, a north aisle and a bell tower added. In 1736 the Baroque Chapel of the Holy Cross was added.

What to see

Star vaults and the polychrome painting by Stanisław Teisseyre of 1948.

A Gothic triptych from the early 16th century in the high altar and a stone font of 1522.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross with a 15th-century Gothic grille and a venerated crucifix from the mid-17th century. In its crypt lie the commanders of the Hospitallers.

Good to know

This is a working church. It cannot be visited during Mass and services, and you are asked to dress modestly and keep quiet.
