Wolsztyn Steam Locomotive Depot

The depot in Wolsztyn is a working steam locomotive station from which trains with a steam locomotive still leave today. The hall with its water tower was built in 1907. It is a working depot in which steam locomotives are still prepared for the road.

History

In 1907 the depot was built with a water tower. In 1991 it was renamed the Wolsztyn Steam Locomotive Depot and the first Steam Locomotive Parade was held.

In June 2016 a cultural institution was established here, and at the beginning of 2017 it received a railway carrier certificate. Since 2004 the Miss World of Steam Locomotives contest has also been held.

What to see

The collection includes about 30 steam locomotives (PAP data from 2018), among them the famous Pm36-2 “Beautiful Helen”. The post-war Pt47-65 locomotive, among others, runs in scheduled service.

A historic turntable, a water tower and a small museum with old tickets, signalling and railwaymen's lanterns, and a model of part of Wolsztyn station.

Every year at the turn of April and May the Steam Locomotive Parade takes place (the jubilee 30th edition was held on 2 May 2026).

Good to know

The depot's website advises coming shortly before a locomotive departs, to see the traditional preparation of a steam engine for the road.

On Saturdays the steam train runs from Wolsztyn to Poznań Główny (according to the timetable valid from 7 March 2026: departure from Wolsztyn 10:46, arrival 12:50, return from Poznań Główny 15:21). On weekdays it runs on the Wolsztyn–Zbąszynek route, and on Sundays and public holidays it does not run in scheduled service. You can buy tickets on the Koleje Wielkopolskie website, at the ticket office at the station or from the train manager. Before you travel, check the timetable on the depot's website, because during inspections the steam locomotive is replaced by a diesel one.

The price list on the depot's website has applied since 1 January 2025. Guided visits require advance booking.
